Types Of Piles
Loop Pile: They are made from uncut tufts in the looped form, having all tufts the same pile height. The loop pile consists of a continuous strand of yarn. If one yarn is stretched, the whole row comes out. It has jute of polypropylene backing. It is also called cording pile. ‘Level loop pile’ is a hardwiring surface formed by continuous loops of yarn of uniform length. Multi-level loop pile uses different lengths of yarn and therefore has of more sculptured appearance. Loop pole is tougher and more easily maintained but is less versatile in colors and patterns. It also lacks the softness of cut pile since light tends to be reflected off the carpet surface. It can be produced in tufted, woven or knitted constructions. It basically has a commercial purpose. It gives and aesthetic appeal. Its weight is 300 to 1000 gms per square meter of polyprophylene.
Cut Pile: Cut pile is a smooth, classic finish, often known as ‘velour’ or ‘velvet pile’, ideal for bringing a luxurious and sensual feel to rooms. The tops of the loops of wool are cut and the yarn is slightly twisted to produce tufts of yarn that stand upright and produce a smooth, even surface. It can produce in tufted, woven and braided construction.
- Hand tufted: These carpets do not show the design at the back. They have a cotton or polyprohyene mesh at the back. It is the cheapest way of carpeting. They are available in both plain and designed patterns. The weight is 2000 to 3500 gms of wool per square meter.
- Machine tufted: These carpets do not show the design at the back. It is good quality carpet. Its cost increases with the interaction of the design. The weight is 1000 to 1500 gms of wool per square meter. The Transasia Group in India is popular for this kind of carpets.
- Handloom: This carpet is not of a very good but of a medium quality. It is the cheapest way of carpeting. They are thin as compared to other carpets. The weight is 1000 to 1500 gms of wool per square meter. At times, an acrylic base is provided which increases the cost. They usually have a jute backing.
Hard Twist: This style of carpet, also called ‘faise cut pile’ is where the yam is twisted to a high degree and then set. The hardwiring texture minimizes racking, shading, and fluffing, making it a very popular and practical carpet.
